Medical internship placements
Medical internships are periods when qualified doctors and physiotherapists undertake compulsory work experience upon completion of their training.
Doctors apply for internship positions affiliated with health trusts and municipalities. These internships involve one year spent working in a hospital environment and a subsequent half year spent working within municipal health services.
Internship places for physiotherapists
The County Governor of each county is responsible for approving internship places for physiotherapists at hospitals and within municipal health services. The County Governors of Troms, Hordaland, and Oslo and Akershus have the primary responsibility for ensuring that there are sufficient placements in their regions (North Norway, Western Norway and Eastern Norway respectively).
Moving to or between internship placements
The Norwegian Directorate of Health administers and allocates grants to cover any travel and moving costs associated with internship placements. Internship candidates who are eligible for the scheme must obtain approval from the Norwegian Directorate of Health in advance. Any questions concerning moving expenses should be directed to the Norwegian Directorate of Health.
Travel expenses – training for interns
Travel expenses incurred by participating in group-based supervision, courses in emergency primary health care and the County Governor’s seminar on public health initiatives are reimbursed by the County Governor of the county in which the internship placement is based.
